CANBERRA Wilmer Flores Jersey , April 24 (Xinhua) -- Indian mangoes will be imported into Australia for the first time after protocols were revised to allow the Asian-grown fruits into the local economy.

Indian mangoes will be allowed into Australia so long as they have been treated with irradiation before leaving India, meaning that Australians will be able to enjoy the fruit long after the local season ends.

The Australian Mango Industry Association's Robert Gray said Indian mangoes would be imported when the Australian season had finished, ensuring a constant supply for those who enjoy the golden fruit.

He added that if the Indian-sourced fruit passed all standards testing, the deal would be beneficial for Australians.

"Our position is that, as part of the global trade, if we want access to other countries around the world (to export Australian mangoes), then providing the protocol is safe and not bringing in any pests or diseases, then we're supportive of other countries having access into our market," Gray told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on Monday.

Gray said that the United States has previously imported Indian mangoes with no problems, but could not predict the type of volume Australia should expect from March until July - during the Indian mango season.

"While India is a huge mango-growing country, their export business is a bit like ours," he said.

"They will be targeting affluent markets, markets where they can place small quantities of very high-value product."

"India is currently trying to ship 200 to 300 tons of mangoes to the United States a year, and it would be those sorts of volumes I would expect (in Australia)."

Meanwhile Kay Bee Exports chief executive Kaushal Khakhar - who will be sending his mangoes to Australia - said shipments would be made up of two varieties - Alphonso and Kesar.

"Alphonso is slightly tricky but handled well, it is one of the best varieties in India," he told Fresh Fruit Portal.

"Kesar is the best commercial variety because it has a good price, good flavor, and it handles very well."

ATHENS, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Greece's Supreme Court ruled on Thursday against the extradition of the eight Turkish military officers who fled to Greece in a helicopter after a failed military coup in July, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

The verdict closed the curtain of the marathon process which had attracted international attention.

Turkey had submitted an extradition request alleging that the servicemen were involved in a failed coup on July 15.

All eight defendants had denied any role in the coup attempt and requested asylum, claiming that their safety would be in danger at home and should they be returned they would not have a fair trial.

In case the court upholds Ankara's request, the final decision rests with Greek Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis.

Speaking to Greek media earlier this week the minister said the government will respect the defendants' right to refer to the European Court of Human Rights, if they decide to do so.

That means the ministry would not reach any decision soon to allow time for the completion of the process at the European justice level.

But Thursday's ruling is regarded as final and cannot be contested.

In December Athens Appeal courts delivered mixed verdicts to extradite five and not extradite the other three.

During January's hearings before the Supreme Court all three prosecutors argued against the extradition, citing concern that the eight will not have a fair trial in Turkey.

The eight military officers appeared in court awaiting a ruling on Monday, but the ruling was put off to Thursday with judges saying that the case required further deliberation.

The eight now have to await decisions on their asylum bids in Greece, which are expected to take several months.

CHINESE smartphone maker Xiaomi has climbed back into the global top five vendors list as the global market shrunk annually, even if only by a fraction, for the first time in 2017, according to a Reuters report Friday.

Worldwide smartphone shipment volume in 2017 dipped by 0.1 percent to 1.47 billion, representing the first annual shrinkage, according to data released by IDC, a leading industry tracker. Another tracker, Strategy Analytics, indicated a 1-percent rise.

With consumers showing no strong desire to upgrade to more expensive new flagship devices, both China and the United States — the world’s largest and third-largest smartphone markets — saw a decline in the last quarter, leading to a 6.3 percent year-on-year drop in total shipment volume in the quarter according to IDC.

Strategy Analytics put the same figure at 9 percent, the biggest fall in smartphone history.

Despite the weak reception of iPhone X, Apple shipped more phones than Samsung in the last quarter, according to IDC data.

China’s Xiaomi replaced domestic rival Vivo to occupy the spot of the world’s fifth-largest smartphone maker after its smartphone shipment grew 74.5 percent to 92.4 million units in the year.

Samsung, Apple, and China’s Huawei and OPPO maintained their top four positions.

The market consolidated towards the top five vendors during the year as shipment volume by others combined dropped 11.7 percent.

Xiaomi, which is now exploring a public listing and valued at around US$100 billion, was once the largest vendor in China in 2014 and 2015 before sales stagnated over the next two years amid fierce competition.

It has regained growth momentum this year with affordable, i.
