With their film set to release in the Chinese mainland on June 3, director Bryan Singer and two leading stars from X-Men: Apocalypse, Evan Peters (Quicksilver) and Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), attended a series of promotional activities in Beijing on Wednesday and Thursday.
The sixth installment in the X-Men film franchise, the film takes place in the 1980s. After what happened in X-Men: First Class (2011) and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), which respectively took place in the 1960s and 1970s, the world at large knows about mutants and has complicated feelings towards this specially gifted group. With tensions already high, Apocalypse, the world's first mutant, awakens from a centuries-long sleep and decides to destroy the world as we know it with the help of his Four Horsemen.
Director of four of the X-Men films, Singer said at a press conference Wednesday that it was important for him to make the new film different than its predecessors.
"[This one] deals with the ideas of ancient mutants and also the introduction of new characters in their younger forms, like Jean Grey, for new audiences as well as fans of the previous films," Singer said, pointing to one special scene in the new film.
"There is a scene with Quicksilver which took one and half months to shoot two minutes of film. Evan worked 17 days on this one sequence alone, which involves all these complex and physical and visual effects."
Created in the 1960s, the mutant characters in Marvel Comics each have their own rich background stories, as such when a group of them appear in a single film it can be difficult for a director to find the right balance between keeping the story moving and focusing on individuals. For instance, some moviegoers who saw the first installment of the series, X-Men (2000), were a little lost as they were being introduced to these characters for the first time. Singer emphasized that backstory was important for a film, and that for Apocalypse he was not willing to sacrifice the story of less prominent characters for sake of keeping the action going.
Returning to the role of Quicksilver after X-Men: Days of Future Past, Peters joked that while his character is 10 years older now, "he is still living in his mother's basement."
"He is trying to find a purpose and something to do with his life. He's trying to connect with his strange father [Magneto], trying to help his father to see the light and moves toward that direction."
For Turner, however, this is her first time portraying Jean Grey, an elder version of which was played by Famke Janssen in the first three X-Men films.
As a longtime fan of the character, Turner's excitement at playing the role was palpable. She pointed out that while the Janssen version was more mature, her younger Jean Grey gave her the chance to show audiences how her character grows from a vulnerable and insecure person to become a brave fighter.
