CAIRO Dres Vedran Corluka Hrvatske , Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Sameh, a man in his 30s, was wearing a white traditional garment and holding a flag of Egypt in his hand while heading to iconic Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo to express his happiness and excitement on the eve of the opening of Egypt's "New Suez Canal."

"I am very happy because tomorrow is the opening of the New Suez Canal. All Egypt is happy for this great event," the man told Xinhua while waving the flag in his hand, expressing support and gratitude for President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi who ordered the project to be completed in one year.

Sameh is one of many Egyptians who seemed happy and excited as the countdown is ticking for the opening of the new waterway on Thursday, while Egyptian streets and squares are preparing for the event by flags of Egypt, posters of Sisi and the new canal's logo as well as long lines of colored lights on both sides.

Sisi gave the go-ahead signal for the national "New Suez Canal" project on August 6 last year. The project, which is 100-percent completed, includes a newly-dug 35-km waterway alongside the original 190-km Suez Canal, plus a 37-km expansion and deepening of some parts of the old one.

In Al-Manial Street leading to ornamented Tahrir Square, Nasser, owner of a small bamboo chair store, hung a poster of Sisi on the wall of his store, saying the "respectful" president managed to put the country on the track of development and economic progress.

"I am very optimistic that the New Suez Canal will bring all goodness and prosperity to Egypt and will reassure a bright future for our children," the man told Xinhua, hoping Egypt will be the best country in the world "as it deserves."

The Interior Ministry distributed flags of Egypt and congratulatory cards to masses of random Egyptian citizens to make them share the celebration of the opening of the project.

Meanwhile, a lot of citizens and activists created a Facebook hashtag and a Twitter trend reading "Egypt rejoices" to express their happiness and eagerness about the inauguration of the new waterway.

However, Islam, a student in his 20's who was standing with two friends outside the American University in Cairo, near Tahrir Square, did not seem as excited as others as he commented briefly on the big event saying, "We will see! This is all I can say."

Egyptian officials said the new waterway is expected to increase the Suez Canal's annual ship traffic revenues from 5.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2015 to 13.4 billion by 2023, luring huge foreign investments and creating thousands of job opportunities.

As for Samia, a housewife in her 40s, said she does not want to exaggerate the hopes until she sees something tangible from what is said about the New Suez Canal.

"We hope it will be as good as they said, but we should not exaggerate now because we do not want any disappointments in the future," the lady told Xinhua while waiting outside electronic stores in Bab el-Louq Street near Tahrir.

At the coastal city of Alexandria, around 220 northwest of the capital Cairo, the Corniche Street of the Mediterranean Sea bank was also full of flags of Egypt and banners and posters of President Sisi and the Suez Canal logo.

"I am very optimistic that the New Suez Canal will bring a lot of prosperity to Egypt, increase the national income, increase ship traffic in the canal, flourish tourism due to growing security and create a lot of job opportunities for our youth," Sahar, a 52-year-old lady female employee, told Xinhua while enjoying time with her family at Miami beach in Alexandria.

Samy, a college student who was taking a walk by the beach, said that Thursday's inauguration of the new waterway will be "a big celebration," expressing hope and expectation that the new project will create many opportunities for jobless youth in the most populous Arab country.

In the city of Ismailia where the international event will be held, about 120 km northeast of Cairo, men were fixing four tall Egyptian flags covering Ismailia Governorate headquarters and reading "Long Live Egypt!"

"We hope it will be a beginning for prosperity all over Egypt. We really hope for the elimination of unemployment, as the new canal is said to bring a lot of investments and new factories. We really hope so," a lady from Ismailia told Xinhua without identifying herself.

Tarek, a youth from Ismailia who was walking near the existing Suez Canal, said that the new accomplishment will immortalize Sisi's name in history.

"As Egyptian youth from Ismailia, we praise President Sisi for this accomplishment that will greatly benefit the youth of Egypt in general and those of Ismailia in particular," the man told Xinhua.

Ismailia Governor Yaseen Taher said that several ceremonies and folklore performances will be organized in conjunction with the opening ceremony of the New Suez Canal, adding that all roads leading to the ceremony's site have been completely developed and well prepared.

State heads, monarchs and high-profile delegations from various countries around the world will attend the inaugural ceremony that will kick off Thursday afternoon.

Egypt declared August 6 this year as an official holiday so that Egyptians can share the celebration, and the country's Ministry of Antiquities decided to open the Pyramids Plateau as well as museums and archeological sites for free on this day.
